Trends often start spontaneously, sometimes a bit ridiculously. One of them is the trend of wearing jeans around the buttocks and revealing the image of boxer shorts to the outside. For those familiar with the culture, it’s called sagging – a men’s fashion style that’s been in vogue since the early 90s and first popularized in hip-hop and skate culture. How did something stupid like this become a trend among young people these days? Let’s explore with Storepc.
The origins of sagging pants culture
One of the most widely-repeated stories is that in the US prison system, slacks are a sign of wanting to find a mate, and this is where the trend first started. Another rumor is that gang members in the states wore jeans this way, as it made it easier for them to hide weapons. However, neither of these theories is true. The true origins of the slouchy-pants fashion lie in the American prison system, but not as a signal that the wearer is “ready for action”.
In fact, prisoners are often given uniforms that are too large for them, and because of suicide prevention efforts behind bars, they are not allowed to wear belts. The combination of these factors has resulted in prisoners frequently wearing long pants and exposing their buttocks, now known as sagging. When the prisoners were released, they continued to wear slacks, and it wasn’t long before it became the dress of Hip-Hop culture.
Gradually, young men around the world updated this new style, but not everyone accepted it. Understandably, a lot of older people saw the craze as the pinnacle of disrespect and were met with a wave of outcry. Over the years, schools, airlines, transportation authorities, and local governments have all put in place rules and regulations against sagging pants, but who can remember her teenage years? they will agree: tell a young man to do something and they will do the opposite.
Although laws have been passed locally in the states, there has never been a federal law against low-rise jeans. Barack Obama even mentioned it in 2008, calling enforcement of such laws a “waste of time,” but went on to say, “With that being said, boys should pull up their pants. You are walking because your mother, your grandmother, your underwear is showing. What’s wrong with that? Any. Some people may not want to see your underwear. I’m one of them.”
The style of wearing pants is now not just for rappers or skaters anymore. In the early 2010s, young singer Justin Bieber – founder of the famous Drew House brand – popularized low-waisted sagging for jeans, which unfortunately has caught up with trendsetters and today. can still be found in Nandos across the country.
The current trend of sagging pants
At the present time, although we no longer often see images of those slacks, that does not mean that they are “extinct”. Gucci has turned sagging pants into a softer version with the brand’s innovative design called Low-rise jeans. Or like Balenciaga, the company has produced jogger pants with a short boxer, with a slightly sagging style but in fact it is just a normal pair of pants with a disruptive design.
However, like every other trend, even though it seems like a good idea at the time and everyone can do it, in the end you are just taking a bunch of pictures of yourself that in A few years from now, you’ll be ashamed to look back on them. Hopefully we’ve all passed the point where we feel the need to drop our pants, but if you’re still not done, let this be your warning.
